Fluoridation of Drinking Water OPPOSED

George Peabody, candidate for governor of Hawaii asks you to think about the risks of fluoridation of drinking water in Hawaii: "Is it common sense to put toxic Fluoride compounds into our drinking water to fight tooth decay when 99% of the water is used to flush toilets, wash cars, and water lawns and gardens, thus spreading the toxic Fluoride into our environment; and by adding toxic industrial waste fluoride compounds to our drinking water without knowing how much or how little of the treatment the intended beneficiaries will take, and the negative health effects it is know to have on medical patients with diabetes, heart and liver problems, asthma, and bone fluorisis? Is it right to subject everybody to a dosage of any kind without his consent? For there is no reason to stop at fluorides. The drinking water can also carry tranquilizers, laxatives, and aphrodisiacs, at the whim of government. Why add a neurotoxin to our water to possibly prevent some cavities? Even if it did reduce some tooth decay, it won't save you money at the dentist. Dental costs of about $110.63 per eligible MediCal recipient in fluoridated communities and $93.21 in unfluoridated communities. San Francisco, fluoridated 43 years has more than double the state average number of dentists. National level statistics show more dentists per capita in fluoridated cities!"

Dr. Cassella:

On behalf of our state's keiki and all other citizens of Hawaii, we are demanding that you retract certain testimony that you gave on February 9, 2002, to the Committee on Health of the Hawaii State Legislature's House of Representatives, during a hearing on HB 2761, which would have authorized the fluoridation of our state's drinking water. In that testimony, you urged the Committee to approve that bill, including the provision to authorize water fluoridation, and in so doing you made the following statement concerning the opponents of water fluoridation: "They really haven't shown that there are any risks that we really need to worry about." First of all, it was presumptuous and irresponsible to make such a statement, inasmuch as you are not a licensed physician and have not established that you are qualified to evaluate medical or physiological risks.

Furthermore, before making any such statement, you should have studied the reports on recent research concerning the risks involved in water fluoridation. You could have learned about the risk of absorbing dangerous quantities of arsenic and lead, two cumulative poisons that are contained as impurities in the fluoride product that is used in about 90% of all water-fluoridation programs in the United States. You could have learned that fluoride inhibits vital enzyme activity in teeth, bones and other tissues. You could have learned that fluoride has been shown to be mutagenic and to cause chromosome damage. You could have learned that fluoridated water can be dangerous for the13 million Americans -- including an estimated 100,000 people in Hawaii -- who suffer from hypothyroidism. You could have read the letter in which an official of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warned that fluoridation poses a risk for 52 million Americans, including an estimated 400,000 people in Hawaii -- particularly those who are more than 55 years old, those with cardiovascular or kidney disease, and those who bodies are deficient in calcium, magnesium or Vitamin C. And if you had continued to keep up with relevant research through April 2002, you would have learned that fluorides have been implicated not only in gingivitis and periodontitis, but in oral cancer as well.

Having glibly and recklessly made a false and misleading statement in your testimony before the House Committee on Health, you have violated the Hawaii State Constitution's Article III, which provides for punishment for contemptuous behavior in the pre- sence of any committee of the State Legislature. You have also violated Section 436B-19, Hawaii Revised Statutes, concerning penalties for licensed professionals for "making false or improbable statements"; and Section 5 of the American Dental Association's "Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct," which states that "The dentist has a duty to communicate truthfully." You have seriously misinformed a Committee of the State Legislature, using your professional status as a dentist and as an officer or representative of the Hawaii Dental Association to bolster the Committee Members' assumption that you were speaking as an expert on the side effects of fluoridated drinking water. You should retract your false and misleading statement, and should apologize to the Committee on Health and to the public. We hereby demand that within five (5) working days, you provide us with a written retraction of the false and misleading statement quoted above, so that it can be posted for all interested parties. Failure to provide such a written retraction will result in our seeking legal redress and all available professional sanctions.
